A little preparation before the technician arrives makes the visit quicker, safer and often cheaper, because less time is spent on access and more on actually fixing the fault. Here is what to do once your fridge repair is booked.

How to Prepare for a Fridge Repair: The Short Answer

Before the technician arrives: move food into an esky or another fridge, clear access to the fridge and the power point, wipe up any water on the floor, note the model number and the symptoms, and do not attempt to open panels or use sharp tools on ice. If there is a burning smell, sparks or the power keeps tripping, switch the fridge off at the wall and leave it off.

1. Protect Your Food

Move perishable food into an esky with ice or ice packs, or into another fridge. Keep freezer items together, as a full, closed esky stays cold longer. This also gives the technician room to work inside the cabinet if needed.

2. Clear Access

  • Clear a path to the fridge.
  • Remove items from the top and sides of the fridge.
  • Make sure the power point behind or beside it can be reached.
  • If the fridge is built into joinery, let us know when booking so we can plan for access to the back or the kick panel.

3. Deal With Water Safely

If there is water on the floor, switch the fridge off at the wall before mopping it up. Water near electrical parts is a safety hazard. Put towels down if the leak is ongoing. See our guide on fridge leaking water for common causes.

4. Do Not Chip Away Ice

If there is heavy frost or ice, do not use a knife or sharp tool. You risk puncturing the evaporator. Unless the technician asks you to, it is often better to leave the ice in place, because its pattern helps diagnose defrost faults.

5. Switch Off If There Is a Burning Smell

If you notice a burning smell, smoke, sparks or scorch marks, switch the fridge off at the wall and do not use it until it has been checked.

6. Note the Model and Symptoms

Have these ready:

  • brand and model number, usually on a label inside the fridge or on the back
  • when the problem started and what you have noticed
  • any error codes on the display. See fridge error codes
  • any noises, leaks or smells
  • purchase date, if you know it, and any warranty paperwork

Sharing this when you book helps the technician bring the right parts.

7. Remove Covers and Clutter

Take off any covers, magnets or items attached to the doors that might get in the way, and move pets to another room.

8. Keep an Adult on Site

Someone over 18 should be home to let the technician in, explain the problem and approve the quote before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I empty my fridge before the repair technician arrives?

Yes, if possible. Move food into an esky or another fridge. It protects the food and gives the technician room to work.

Should I defrost my fridge before a repair?

Not unless the technician asks. The ice pattern often helps diagnose defrost faults. Never use sharp tools on ice.

Where do I find my fridge model number?

It is usually on a label inside the fridge compartment, on the side wall or behind the crisper drawers, or on the back of the fridge.
