Fridge Light Not Working? Causes, Checks and When It Matters

A fridge light that will not come on, flickers or stays on with the door closed seems like a small thing. But the light is often linked to the door switch, which on many fridges also controls fans and alarms, so a light fault can sometimes point to a bigger problem.

Fridge Light Not Working: The Short Answer

If the fridge light is not working, the most common causes are a blown globe or failed LED module, a faulty door switch, a loose connector, or a control board fault. If the light is out but the fridge is still cold, it is usually just the light or switch. If the light is out and the fridge is also warm with no display, check the power first, as the fridge may not be getting power at all.

Step 1: Check the Power

  • Is the display on? Is the fridge cold?
  • If nothing works, check the power point and switchboard. See fridge stopped working.

Step 2: Identify Your Light Type

  • Globe: older fridges use a small replaceable globe behind a cover. With the fridge switched off at the wall, it can often be replaced using the correct appliance globe.
  • LED module or strip: most modern fridges use LED lighting that is replaced as a module, sometimes with a driver board. This is usually a technician job.

Common Causes

Blown globe or failed LED

The most common cause on older fridges. LEDs last much longer but can still fail.

Faulty door switch

The switch tells the fridge the door is open. If it fails, the light may stay off, or stay on with the door closed. On many models the same switch stops the fan and triggers the door alarm, so a faulty switch can also cause cooling or alarm issues.

Light stays on with the door closed

Usually a stuck or faulty door switch. A light staying on inside a closed fridge adds heat and can affect cooling. Try the door switch by pressing it with the door open. If the light does not go off, the switch likely needs replacing.

Loose connector or wiring

Vibration or previous repairs can loosen connectors. This needs a technician.

Control board fault

On electronic fridges, the light is driven by the control board. A board fault can affect the light along with other functions. See fridge error codes.

When a Light Fault Matters More

Book a technician if the light problem comes with:

  • the fridge warming up
  • the door alarm going off with the door closed
  • the fans not running
  • a burning smell or flickering display

Other Problems We Fix

Temperature problems, noises, leaks and frost are far more common than light faults. See common fridge problems and common fridge noises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my fridge light not working but the fridge is cold?

Usually a blown globe, a failed LED module or a faulty door switch. The fridge itself is still getting power.

Can I replace a fridge light myself?

On older fridges with a replaceable globe, often yes, with the fridge switched off at the wall. LED modules usually need a technician.

Why does my fridge light stay on when the door is closed?

A stuck or faulty door switch is the usual cause. It can add heat and affect cooling, so it is worth fixing.
