Put your hand on the side of a fridge and it will often feel warm. That surprises a lot of people, but in many modern fridges it is completely normal. The trick is telling the difference between normal warmth and heat that signals a problem.
Why Is My Fridge Hot on the Outside? The Short Answer
Many fridges have condenser tubing built into the side panels or around the door frame, so warm sides and a warm strip between the doors are normal, especially after the door has been opened a lot or on a hot day. It becomes a concern when the sides are too hot to keep your hand on, the fridge is also struggling to cool, or the heat is combined with the compressor running constantly. The usual causes then are dirty condenser coils, a failed condenser fan, poor ventilation, direct sun or a worn door seal.
Where the Heat Comes From
A fridge does not create cold. It moves heat from inside the cabinet to the outside. That heat is released through the condenser, which can be:
- a coil on the back of the fridge
- a coil underneath with a fan, near the compressor
- tubing hidden inside the side walls, which warms the outer panels
- a heated strip around the door opening to stop condensation forming on the seal
So some warmth on the outside is a sign the fridge is working.
When a Hot Fridge Is a Problem
Dirty condenser coils
Dust, lint and pet hair act like a blanket on the coils. The fridge cannot release heat efficiently, runs longer and gets hotter. With the fridge switched off at the wall, vacuum the coils at the back or underneath.
Failed condenser fan
On fridges with an underneath condenser, a fan pulls air across the coils and compressor. If it stops, heat builds up quickly and cooling drops. If you cannot hear or feel the fan running when the compressor is on, it may need replacing.
Not enough ventilation

Direct sun or nearby heat sources
A fridge beside an oven, dishwasher or sunny window has to work much harder. Relocate it if you can.
Worn door seal
A leaking seal lets warm air in, so the fridge runs more and releases more heat. Try the paper test on the seal.
