Your fridge has just been repaired. The technician has packed up, and now you want to know when you can restock, what is normal as it settles and how to tell whether the fix has worked. A few simple steps in the first day or two make a real difference.
After a Fridge Repair: The Short Answer
After a fridge repair, give it time to reach temperature before fully restocking, which can take several hours and up to 24 hours, check temperatures with a thermometer, load it gradually, and watch for the original symptoms returning. Some noises and a longer run time are normal while the fridge pulls down to temperature. If the problem comes back, contact the repairer, as good repairs come with a warranty.
1. Give It Time to Settle
After a repair, particularly one involving the compressor, sealed system, defrost system or control board, the fridge needs time to pull down to temperature. Many fridges are close within a few hours, but it can take up to 24 hours to fully stabilise. Your technician will tell you if a longer wait is needed.
2. Check the Temperature
Place a thermometer in a glass of water in the middle of the fridge and another in the freezer. Around 3 to 5 degrees Celsius for the fridge and around minus 18 for the freezer is a good general target. Check again the next day.
3. Restock Gradually
Put cold and frozen items back first. Avoid loading a large amount of warm food at once, and leave space around the vents so air can circulate.
4. Clean While It Is Empty
A repair visit is a good time to wipe down shelves, clean the seals and flush the defrost drain. Our guide on how to clean a fridge explains how.
5. Know What Is Normal
- the compressor running for longer than usual while it cools down
- some clicking as the controls cycle
- gurgling as refrigerant circulates
- a little condensation on shelves as the cabinet cools
6. Watch for Warning Signs
Call the repairer if you notice:
- the original fault coming back
- the fridge not reaching temperature after 24 hours
- new noises, leaks or frost build-up
- error codes or alarms. See fridge error codes
7. Ask About Other Worn Parts
If the technician noticed a worn door seal or a fan starting to fail, it is often worth addressing it while the fridge is already being looked after. A split seal, for example, makes a freshly repaired fridge work harder than it should.
8. Keep Your Paperwork
Keep the invoice, warranty details and the model number together. At Ace Fridge Repairs, repairs are backed by a 12-month warranty on parts and labour.
