Why Is My Fridge Vibrating? Causes and How to Fix It

Every fridge vibrates a little. The compressor and fans are moving parts, and a faint vibration you can feel through the side panel is normal. When the vibration becomes strong enough to rattle bottles, hum through the floor or shake nearby cabinetry, something is usually out of place or starting to wear.

Why Is My Fridge Vibrating? The Short Answer

Excessive fridge vibration is most often caused by the fridge not being level, the fridge touching a wall or cabinet, a loose drain pan, dust on the condenser fan, or worn compressor mounts. Levelling the fridge and giving it clearance fixes most cases. If the vibration comes from the compressor and continues after those checks, a technician should inspect the mounts, fans and compressor.

Common Causes of Fridge Vibration

Uneven floor or unlevelled feet

This is the number one cause. A fridge on an uneven tile, a sloping floor or with one foot not touching the ground will rock slightly every time the compressor starts. Adjust the front feet with a spirit level on top until the fridge is steady and the front sits slightly higher than the back.

Fridge touching walls, cabinets or pipes

Built-in and tightly fitted fridges often vibrate against the surrounding joinery. Even a few millimetres of clearance can make a big difference. Check the gap your manual recommends at the back, sides and top.

Loose drain pan

The drain pan sits underneath, near the compressor. If it has shifted, it can buzz or rattle whenever the compressor runs.

Dusty or unbalanced condenser fan

Dust on the condenser fan blades throws them out of balance and makes the fan vibrate. Vacuuming the coils and fan, with the fridge switched off at the wall, often helps.

Worn compressor mounts

The compressor sits on rubber grommets that absorb vibration. Over time they harden or split, and the compressor starts transmitting vibration straight into the cabinet. This needs a technician.

Worn evaporator fan

A fan with worn bearings inside the freezer can vibrate and squeal. If the vibration changes when you open the freezer door, the evaporator fan is a likely suspect.

Loose doors, hinges or handles

Doors that are out of alignment or loose handles can rattle when the fridge runs. Tightening fixings and checking hinge alignment can help.

How a Technician Diagnoses Fridge Vibration

When we attend a vibrating fridge, we:

  1. Check the floor, levelling feet and clearances.
  2. Listen through a full compressor cycle to pinpoint the source.
  3. Inspect the drain pan, condenser fan and coils.
  4. Check compressor mounting grommets and refrigeration pipework for rubbing.
  5. Test the evaporator fan motor and check for ice build-up.
  6. Explain the cause and the repair before starting work.

Vibration With Other Symptoms

If vibration comes with poor cooling, repeated clicking or a burning smell, switch the fridge off at the wall and book a technician. These can be signs of a compressor or electrical fault. Our guides on common fridge noises and signs of a bad compressor can help you describe the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for a fridge to vibrate?

A light vibration when the compressor runs is normal. Vibration strong enough to rattle contents, cabinetry or the floor is not, and usually means the fridge is out of level or a part is worn.

How do I stop my fridge from vibrating?

Level the fridge with the front slightly higher, leave clearance around it, check the drain pan is secure and clean the condenser fan. If it still vibrates, have the compressor mounts and fans checked.

Can a vibrating fridge damage itself?

Ongoing heavy vibration can loosen fittings and wear refrigeration pipework over time. It is worth fixing early.
